5th arrondissement in Paris
5th arrondissement of Paris, the Panthéon arrondissement is one of the 20 municipal Parisian arrondissements, the oldest district of the city, located on the left bank of the Seine, a significant part of the arrondissement is occupied by the hill of St. Genevieve. The district includes the so-called Latin Quarter, the construction of which by the Romans began in antiquity. The construction of the Roman town Lutetia dates back from the 1st century BC. The Roman city then developed around the cardo maximus, the north-south axis found in all Roman cities, the current rue Saint-Jacques, following an urban layout of perpendicular streets. The city center is located at rue Saint-Jacques, 172 and 174, that is, at the top of Mount Sainte-Genevieve. The Decumanus, the main east-west axis, has no fixed route in Paris.
The city forum was located in the 1st century in the current area of rue Soufflot, between the boulevard Saint-Michel and the rue Saint-Jacques. This forum then extended roughly from the rue Coujas to the rue Malebranche. The ancient city also included the baths at the corner of the Boulevard Saint-Michel and the Boulevard Saint-Germain, and next to the current Collège de France.
In the south it borders on the 14th, in the west on the 6th arrondissement, in the east on the 13th, in the north on the 4th arrondissement of Paris (opposite coast). Three bridges connect the territory of the district with the island of Cite, two - with the island of St. Louis.
There is a wide variety of cafes and restaurants and souvenir shops.
